The story follows a group of young German prisoners of war who are forced by Danish authorities to clear buried landmines from the country’s beaches. Under the command of Danish Sergeant Carl Rasmussen, the boys - many of them barely more than teenagers - face the threat of death with every step.
As the harsh realities of their task unfold, Rasmussen’s initial hostility begins to soften, and the film explores themes of revenge, compassion, and the moral cost of war as both captor and captives are changed by their shared ordeal.
